Deaf Services Advisory Council

Mission Statement

Provide the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS) support, consultation, and technical assistance regarding comprehensive services for persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, or deafblind.

Roles and Functions

On behalf of persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, or deafblind living in the Commonwealth, the roles and functions of the Advisory Council shall include, but not be limited to, providing:

Guidance concerning planning, human resource development and training, policy recommendations, and development of services;

Ongoing support, consultation and technical assistance to providers of mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse services;

Networking with agencies serving persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, or deafblind;

Technical training and education to state agencies, community services boards, and post secondary institutions concerning mental health, mental retardation, substance abuse and other related issues;

Consultation to the Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) and the Department for the Visually Handicapped (VDVH);

Advocacy for resources; and

Production of a bi-annual report to the DMHMRSAS Commissioner and the Director of Mental Health Services for dissemination to Community Services Boards and State Psychiatric Facilities.

All meetings will take place at the Department of Rehabilitation Services, 8004 Franklin Farms Drive, Richmond, VA. Take 64 West to Glenside Drive South. Make a right onto Forest Drive. Make a right onto Frankin Farms Road. Look for 8004 on the right (Lee Building). See you there!
